In need of an Architecture Fix!

Welcome to the land of Italianate and Gothic Revival, as well as, Mid-century, Craftsman, colorful kitsch and modern fun! 

Start with your pillow.  Why not book into a Frank Lloyd Wright designed vacation rental?  Originally designed for William and Mary Palmer as their residence you can now enjoy this brick and cypress beauty while exploring the area. Once you pull away from your home-away-from-home set out to Chelsea for a little breakfast. A Jiffy breakfast of corn muffins and pancakes will do nicely!  “Jiffy” aka Chelsea Milling Company has been family owned and milling flour for over 100 years.  Call ahead for your own tour.

While you are in the car head out to Domino Farms where high-powered business mingles with the buffalo herd. Considered by many to be architecturally noteworthy, Domino Farms sits on 270 acres of open land with pastures, a petting farm and manicured gardens.

Next stop Kerrytown, the original village of Ann Arbor.  Kerrytown was named after County Kerry in Ireland and founded in the late 1870s.  Here you can find shopping, dining and beautifully preserved homes in this walk able area, which were the beginnings of Ann Arbor.

From Kerrytown take a nice stroll past The Michigan Theatre.  Still home to film festivals and musical performances the theatre has been restored to its original palatial glory of the roaring 20’s.

Now you are ready for a little Kitsch. Pop over to Chick Inn Classic Drive in Ypsilanti. Grab a Paul Bunyan Burger while you enjoy this original 1950’s drive-in.  On your drive over notice a number of examples of the California Craftsman homes still adorning Washtenaw Ave.

Now that your belly is full take a walk through the late 1800’s Depot Town.  Stop for a beer at Sidetrack Bar & Grill or wander through Riverside Park (designed by famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted) and enjoy the view of the mansions along N. Huron overlooking the river.  These homes are rich in architectural detail and styling including Italianate, Gothic Revival and Second Empire.

Finally ready to wind down?  Head over to Arbor Lanes Bowling.  Even if you don’t throw strikes, snap a pic under the iconic sign.
