The 2012 Downtown Ypsilanti Farmers’ Market kicks off Tuesday May 1st and will run until October 30th every Tuesday from 2-6 pm. Growing Hope’s Downtown Ypsilanti Farmers’ Market aims to increase access to fresh and healthy food while supporting our local economy and developing our downtown. By providing a venue for farmers, urban market gardens, and other entrepreneurs, we contribute to health of the community and the viability of our local food system. Our positive growth in food stamp and other low-income programs at the Farmers’ Market has led us to advise other markets to help them replicate our success. We will celebrate the market’s seventh season in 2012, thanks to dedicated partners Washtenaw County Public Health, the Ypsilanti Food Co-op, and MSU-Extension, with continued support from the Ypsilanti Health Coalition.

White Buffalo

The Purple Rose Theatre Company continues its 2011/12 Season with White Buffalo, a world premiere by Don Zolidis. Winner of the 2004 Princess Grace Award for Playwriting and a 2011 EdgertonFoundation New American Play Award, the production will enjoy a ten-week engagement from Thursday, March 29 – Saturday, June 2, 2012.

When Carol Gelling discovers that a buffalo born on her farm is pure white, she thinks it’s nothing more than a curiosity. She soon learns that the birth of the white buffalo fulfills an ancient Sioux prophecy — the coming of peace on earth and unity of mankind. Almost overnight, her small farm becomes a hotbed of spiritual outpouring — from Native American pilgrims to the Dalai Lama. When a mysterious businessman offers to buy the calf, Carol must decide whether the white buffalo signals the end of her financial hardships or the beginning of her own spiritual enrichment. This award-winning new play weaves a magical story of forgiveness, hope, and belonging.

Come to historic Eastern Michigan University’s Pease Auditorium, and be dazzled by violin virtuoso and friend of the YSO, Gareth Johnson, as he performs Tchaikovsky’s D major Violin Concerto on a beautiful violin crafted by Antonio Stradivari in 1709, courtesy of The Henry Ford. A world-class artist and a world class instrument, right in our hometown.

Angelin Preljocaj has created a work for all 26 dancers of his contemporary ballet company, setting the Grimm brothers’ version of the fairytale to the most beautiful scores of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies. With costumes designed by Jean Paul Gaultier, this production of Snow White is sure to shake up those who have grown up with only the Disney version at their disposal. “I was very keen to tell a story, offer something magical and enchanted,” says Preljocaj. At the same time, he approaches Snow White’s stepmother, the Queen, as the centerpiece of the story, representing the conflict of her own longing to be desirable and seductive while watching her daughter grow up.

The Ypsilanti Jaycees are bringing games, candy, fab prizes, and marshmallows falling from the sky Saturday, March 31 from 9 am – 12:30 pm at Frog Island Park.

It’s the 14th annual Easter Egg Scramble, come join in on the Easter Fun!!!! This is an event open to the public and is a guaranteed good time for the entire family.
